Monitor arms for small desks: measure these 5 things first
For: one monitor on a desk under about 120 cm wide / 60 cm deep. Not for: ultrawide multi-monitor rigs — the maths and the arms are different.
The 5 measurements
| Check | Why it matters on a small desk | How to measure |
|---|---|---|
| VESA pattern | Most arms need 75×75 or 100×100 mm mounts; some monitors need an adapter. | Look for four screw holes in a square on the back of the monitor, or check the manual. |
| Monitor weight (without stand) | Gas-spring arms have a working range — too light is as bad as too heavy. | Manufacturer spec for panel weight, not the boxed weight. |
| Clamp clearance | A C-clamp needs a clear desk edge and space behind it; cable skirts and modesty panels block many clamps. | Measure desk thickness and the clear gap behind the desk. |
| Desk depth | An arm that cannot fold flat pushes the screen closer than a stand did. | Note how far the arm's elbow sticks out at its most folded position. |
| Viewing distance | On a shallow desk, a riser + laptop can be the better, cheaper answer. | Roughly an arm's length for 24–27 inch screens is a common ergonomic starting point. |
Arm, riser, or neither?
- Arm: best when you need height adjustability and want the desk surface back. Watch the weight range and clamp fit.
- Riser (often with a drawer): simpler, no moving parts, adds under-monitor storage. Fixed height is the trade-off.
- Neither: if your desk is against a wall with no clamp gap and your screen height is already right, spend the money on lighting or cable management instead.
US / UK note
The same arm is often sold under different model names in the US and UK, and weight limits are listed in kg in the UK and lb in the US. When this guide is published, each pick will be checked in both stores separately instead of assuming cross-availability.
