Compact keyboards & keyboard trays for shallow desks
A 65% or 75% keyboard can free more mouse room than a tray adds. Compare compact layouts, tray fit, clamp and knee-clearance checks for shallow desks.
Cheaper fix first: shrink the keyboard
A full-size keyboard with a number pad pushes your mouse far to the right (or left), which twists the shoulder out on a small desk. Dropping the pad — a tenkeyless (TKL), 75% or 65% layout — pulls the mouse back into the comfort zone and can make a tray unnecessary.
| Layout | You keep | You lose / relearn |
|---|---|---|
| TKL (80%) | Arrows, F-row, navigation cluster | Number pad only |
| 75% | Arrows + F-row, compressed | Some key spacing habits |
| 65% | Arrows | F-row becomes a function layer |
| 60% | Letters and little else in one layer | Arrows too — most typists on small desks stop at 65% |
When a tray is still the answer
- Your desk is too high and cannot be lowered — a tray drops the keys to elbow height.
- Desk depth is so shallow that keyboard + monitor viewing distance cannot both fit on top.
Tray fit checks
- Under-desk clearance: tray + your thighs must fit; measure floor-to-underside and subtract tray drop (see measurement guide).
- Clamp vs screw: clamp trays suit rented desks and glass/frame desks only if the edge is clear.
- Tray width vs keyboard + mouse: many trays fit the keyboard but exile the mouse back to the desk — defeating the point.
- US / UK layout trap: UK (ISO) and US (ANSI) keyboards have different Enter keys and legends. Buy the layout you type on, in that market's store.
